Herold’s work pursues a constant dialogue between structured themes and compositions and opportunities to embrace elements of chance and intuition. Her current work explores the latter, highlighting bold color combinations and expansive gestures. These works embrace the rigorous built surface she has so steadily developed, though they shift away from thick topography and allow for lighter and looser expressions driven by unpredictable moments in the studio. These unplanned compositions stand in great contrast to earlier works. Scientific formulas and symbols no longer provide compositional scaffolding as Herold leans confidently into instinct by relying on the forms themselves to lead. She does not set an agenda, reach to cover her tracks or obfuscate her moves, instead allowing them– unencumbered, vulnerable, and strong– to directly reflect the internal dialogue only accessible in the release of the studio space.
