Herold's paintings often feature a humming, frenetic energy. These works reflect a certain openness and energetic density, serving as a reaction to earlier, more intentionally restrictive compositions. An interest in the complex signaling and adaptive aesthetics of cellular structures comes to the fore; disjointed lines and unraveled loops reference epigenetic mutations and look toward science for grounding. Quantitative formulas, graphs, and genetic charts serve as visual references and as tactile sculptural materials applied directly on the canvas. Paper, pencil, soil, cement, and string are added to the acrylic and embedded within the surface, which is then sanded down and built up again layer by layer.
